Detailed Itinerary

01
Lisbon, Portugal
WED, SEPTEMBER 24 • 00:00 - 21:00

A glorious mosaic of beauty, freedom, and authenticity, Portugal's capital is a stirring artwork of a city. Known for the seven hills it spreads across, and its stirring fado music, Lisbon is a pastel-colored blend of houses and beautiful tile artworks - and this creative city strikes a perfect harmony between natural and manmade beauty. Stroll along Alfama's steep, cobbled streets as you explore one of the city's oldest neighborhoods - where each house and door could be its own photograph. Look for the decorative tiles, with the distinctive blues and whites of Azulejo ceramics, and visit the dedicated museum to learn more. Afterward, wind up to São Jorge Castle, where views out across Lisbon's red rooftops unravel. Just one of many majestic viewpoints, you can also seek out Miradouro da Graça for perhaps Lisbon's finest panorama, with the copper-colored suspension bridge stretching over sparkling water beyond the sea of buildings. The elegant Tower of Belém rises in the Tagus estuary and is a historic defender of these shores. The grand, carved cloisters of Jerónimos Monastery spread out close by, and there's another UNESCO-recognized location close by at Sintra, where a colorful town is set amid thick gardens and towering mountains - capped by the royal Pena Palace. Later, relax and take a quick break to drink Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur made from chocolate cups instead of coffee. Lisboetas have a sweet tooth, and the famous Pastel de Nata's crumbling pastry and caramelized custard topping is the essential accompaniment to any coffee stop.

Day at sea
THU, SEPTEMBER 25 • 00:00 - 00:00

Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and catch up with what you've been meaning to do. So whether that is going to the gym, visiting the spa, whale-watching, catching up on your reading, or simply topping up your tan, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shoreside.

Day at sea
03
Gibraltar, Gibraltar
FRI, SEPTEMBER 26 • 08:00 - 19:00

A curious slice of Britain - picked up and plonked into the sun, sea, and sand of southern Spain - Gibraltar is a unique and historic peninsula, crowned by the iconic Rock of Gibraltar mountain. Bright red phone boxes gleam, Union Jacks flutter in the breeze, and cones of fish and chips are scoffed in the sun in this most British of outposts. At times a surreal and strange juxtaposition, you can be gazing at the African shoreline from the beach one moment, and carefully treading across the runway of a crammed-in international airport the next. Gibraltar's cathedral-like Rock towers 400 meters above the waves and the stark limestone mountain watches out across a narrow, strategic strait between the European and African continents. The pointed Rock is a symbol of this unique place, and you can hike it - or take the convenient cable car - to enjoy the views and meet the mischievous colony of Barbary macaques who live on its slopes. Europe's only wild monkeys roam free and loose on the mountain - so be sure to hang onto your sunglasses and cameras. The Siege Tunnels bring to life the struggles for this land, with the plucky British boring tunnels through the rock by hand, effectively converting it into a giant watchtower, capable of defending the distant territory. Natural caves inside droop with stalactites, while a squat Moorish castle stands proudly at its summit. Gibraltar packs a lot into this two-and-a-half square miles of territory, which has fallen under British jurisdiction since 1713. Grand Casemates Square is a sunbathed plaza, and drizzly old Britain feels a world away, as you sit back and sip ice-cold beers and cocktails in Gibraltar's historic center.

05
Cartagena (Spain) , Spain
SUN, SEPTEMBER 28 • 09:00 - 19:00

On the crossroads of mighty cultures, this Murcian port has endless ancient stories to share. A valuable natural harbor attracted many civilizations to this sun-bathed, southeasterly setting - following its foundation by the Carthaginians in 227 BC. Blending the imprints left by countless cultures on this global junction, the presence of everyone from the Vandals to the Phoenicians and Moors can be felt as you explore, walking between ruins and celebrated modernist architecture along Calle Mayor. Cartagena is crowned by the soaring Castillo de la Concepcion - rise to the stout castle aboard a panoramic lift. Inside, look through reams of archaeological treasures, or admire the rolling views down over the port and across the waters. Watch out for the electric blue peacocks who strut flamboyantly. Cartagena's emergence as a visitor destination coincided with a stunning discovery in 1988 - the bowl of a gloriously preserved Roman Theater. Enter to sit among the grandiose ancient venue, so evocative, you can't help but imagine the historic performances that have graced its stage. Wander the breezy waterfront, looking across the narrow strait towards Africa's distant haze, and spotting gleaming warships. Cartagena's perfect harbor means it has been one of Spain's oldest strategic navy positions since the 16th century. Settle to enjoy the joys of tapas in lively bars - sampling crisped paella, squid and honeyed-eggplant. Easter's Semana Santa festivities are typically lively here, as hooded processions, lavish floats, and somber fiery displays roll through the streets.

Valencia, Spain
TUE, SEPTEMBER 30 • 08:00 - 19:00

Valencia is a proud city. During the Civil War, it was the last seat of the Republican Loyalist government (1935-36), holding out against Franco's National forces until the country fell to 40 years of dictatorship. Today it represents the essence of contemporary Spain's daring design and architecture along with experimental cuisine - but remains deeply conservative and proud of its traditions. Though it faces the Mediterranean, Valencia's history and geography have been defined most significantly by the River Turia and the fertile floodplain (huerta) that surrounds it. The city has been fiercely contested ever since it was founded by the Greeks. El Cid captured Valencia from the Moors in 1094 and won his strangest victory here in 1099: he died in the battle, but his corpse was strapped into his saddle and so frightened the besieging Moors that it caused their complete defeat. In 1102 his widow, Jimena, was forced to return the city to Moorish rule; Jaume I finally drove them out in 1238. Modern Valencia was best known for its frequent disastrous floods until the River Turia was diverted to the south in the late 1950s. Since then the city has been on a steady course of urban beautification. The lovely bridges that once spanned the Turia look equally graceful spanning a wandering municipal park, and the spectacularly futuristic Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences), most of it designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava, has at last created an exciting architectural link between this river town and the Mediterranean. If you're in Valencia, an excursion to Albufera Nature Park is a worthwhile day trip.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain
THU, OCTOBER 2 • 09:00 - 00:00

A rugged Mediterranean gem, arising out of the rich blue haze, Mallorca is a Spanish island of cuisine, culture, and sun-gorged beaches. Palma de Mallorca is the island's dominating capital and a sand-colored mirage of glorious buildings and living history. Conquered and liberated countless times over the years, since its Bronze Age founding, the city is your gateway to ceaseless Mediterranean beauty, buzzy markets, and intense flavors. Cafes and bars wait close to the sweeping coastline, where you can enjoy strong espressos to kick start the day, or splashes of red Mallorcan wines to round it off. Bicycles trundle up and down the promenade, which invites you to wander in the morning sunshine beside the waves. Dominated by the indefatigable form of Santa María cathedral, which looms over the city and coastline, Palma de Mallorca is drenched in history and culture. The labyrinth of the old town is a cobbled haven, which bustles with dripping ice creams and sun-lashed squares. Settle to try the island's superb cuisine, and savor local ingredients with an exceptional depth of flavor. Something about the sunshine here makes tomatoes extra sharp and delicious, while the seafood is consistently juicy and plump. The creation of the mighty cathedral, Le Seu, began in 1229 and was eventually concluded in 1601. A perfect encapsulation of Palma de Mallorca's blend of the historic and the contemporary, even Gaudi lent his hand to it, and the interior features a spectacular modernist take on the New Testament from artist Miquel Barcelo, which is painted across the chapel's walls. The splendid Royal Palace of La Almudaina fortress stands nearby, a left-behind Moorish footprint of square towers and Arabic archways that now serves as an official summer residence for the King of Spain.

Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and catch up with what you've been meaning to do. Monte Carlo, Monaco
SUN, OCTOBER 5 • 07:00 - 00:00

Glitzy, glamorous, and unashamedly luxurious - live the high life in Monte Carlo. From the super-yachts jostling for position in the harbor to the lavish bars splashing out iced champagne, tiny Monaco's only city is a high-rolling, decadent affair - and a gloriously indulgent, sun-soaked taste of the good life. Famed for its low tax status - and the Formula One race that roars through its hairpin bends and tight streets each year - Monaco is the ultimate playground of the rich and famous. Monaco may be the world's second-smallest country - only the Vatican has a smaller footprint - but Monte Carlo has a confidence, impact, and appeal that few can match. The gilded Royal Palace adds an air of regal glory, and whether you want to soak up the culture at the opera or raise the stakes at a casino - doing your finest 007 impressions - you'll feel very much at home here. Soar above the high-rise hotels and glorious casinos in a helicopter, to see the city from above, and admire landmarks like the cathedral where Grace Kelly married the Prince of Monaco in 1956. High-end fashion, fragrances, and fancy adornments await in the gold-label shops of Monte Carlo's lavish shopping streets, while the old town's pink and lemon floral facades offer an authentic balance of historic character to counterpoint the well-heeled excesses. A wonderful escape, revel in old-world glitz and glam, as you admire twinkling chandeliers and wander between palatial architecture while enjoying your time in Monte Carlo's abundant wonderland. Before you leave, explore the storied fortress that protected this tiny state's independence for so long.

Alghero, Sardinia, Italy
TUE, OCTOBER 7 • 08:00 - 18:30

Encircled by dramatic medieval walls, which rise abruptly from deep-blue waters, Alghero's defenses shelter one of Sardinia's largest and most spectacular old towns. Uneven cobbled streets, rich history, and a fiery Catalan flare provide a real depth of character, and the Coral Riviera's pristine beaches, which stretch out nearby, help to make Alghero a real highlight of Sardinia. Alghero has changed hands numerous times over its tempestuous history, but it's the Catalan influence that you'll feel most acutely, as you explore. It was the Catalans who upgraded the defensive ramparts of the 'Sardinian Barcelonetta' into the spectacular, imposing fortress we see today, enclosing the old town's evocative knot of narrow streets and rose-gold-colored masonry. Wander the streets at your leisure, enjoying the cooling shade of the tight, cobblestone streets with lemon gelato in hand, or enjoying fresh tuna steak at the bustling La Boqueria market. Alghero Cathedral is hidden amid the labyrinth of narrow streets but it's the distinctive Baroque-dome of Chiesa di San Michele that you'll immediately notice peeking ostentatiously over the terracotta roofs of the old town, flaunting its rainbow-colored patterning. Plush restaurants revel in Alghero's historical collision of cultures and produce delicious fare like plump clams tangled in tagliatelle, and succulent porcetto pork - slowly roasted to perfection in smoky wood ovens. Wash it down with mirto, a crushed berry liqueur, or sample the fruits of local vineyards, with a platter of Sardinia's renowned pecorino sheep's cheese. The city dominates Sardinia's Coral Riviera - so named because of the red coral found here that's been used for jewelry since Roman times. Lie back and listen to the waves washing ashore at Spiaggia di Maria Pia beach, breathing in the smell of pine needles on the breeze.

Trapani, Sicily, Italy
THU, OCTOBER 9 • 08:00 - 18:00

Surrounded by glowing turquoise waters and rugged coastline, Trapani invites you to explore western Sicily's ruins, intense flavors, and sun-soaked leisure pursuits. Built on salt and tuna exports, Trapani is experiencing a renaissance, having been lovingly spruced up as a sailing capital, and an international airport bringing in visitors from far and wide. The town looks out over the Egadi Islands, gazing west to witness some of Sicily’s most evocative sunset displays. Start exploring Trapani from its historic core, a dense network of alleys hosting a collection of small shops, restaurants, and wine bars. You'll encounter the Cathedral of San Lorenzo - where colorful artworks are spread below sweeping arches and a beautiful domed roof. Sicily feels like an island on the cusp of continents, and Trapani practically has one foot in Africa, as you soak in its pretty whitewashed houses and fusion of foods and arts. Discover the Ancient Greek influence by venturing to rich archaeological sites nearby, like Selinus and Segesta, where the treasures from the past have been unearthed and displayed. Pyramids of white salt rise up at the Riserva Naturale Saline di Trapani e Paceco. These salt marshes and windmills are a symbol of Trapani, and although sea salt production is much less important today, the small white hills remain a Trapani landmark. Look out for the pink flamingos wading in the salt pans below. For beach days, the Egadi Islands can be easily reached from Trapani - Favignana is the largest and most popular.

Giardini Naxos (Sicily), Italy
SAT, OCTOBER 11 • 08:00 - 19:00

Hugging a long, sweeping bay, Giardini Naxos welcomes you ashore to some of Sicily's most scenic and historic sites. Naxos was the first Greek settlement in Sicily, and it is surrounded by remarkable remains and swirling mythology. With a long arc of sun-soaked golden sand, you can kick back by the waves - and cool off with a dip into the sea's refreshing embrace. Up above the seaside revelry, the spectacular Taormina hillside town perches - containing rich Roman and Greek history. Visit to encounter one of Sicily's best views, as you look down over the rejuvenating blue of the sea, and the looming backdrop of Mount Etna rising in the distance. The majestic, honey-colored Greek theater is a highlight, standing before the distant loom of the volcano. Head towards the puffs of cloud, and wisps of smoke, that gather around the peak of Sicily's mighty volcano, which is among the most active in Europe. Arrive through vineyards, thriving in this fertile soil, before taking the 1,737-meter incline to the summit of the legendary mountain of fire, across fields of solidified lava flows. Known to the Greeks as the home of the God of Fire, and the one-eyed Cyclops, the mountain continues to amaze and awe with its restless power. Vineyards carpet the scenery - interrupted by occasional cacti and citrus groves - and produce some of Sicily's most refined flavors. Enjoy a glass of wine on Giardini Naxos' seafront, and toast your time on these rich Sicilian shores.

Kotor, Montenegro
MON, OCTOBER 13 • 08:00 - 19:00

Embedded into the slopes of the steep Lovćen mountain, and overlooking the deep blue Adriatic, the fortified town of Kotor boasts a spectacular, imposing staging that few can match. Squeezing in through the tight Bay of Kotor is a daunting and impressive approach, as you arrive via one of Europe's most stunning waterways. A pearl of Montenegro and the Adriatic, Kotor's warren-like streets drip with history and authenticity. Under Venetian influence for four centuries, the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site old town invites you to wander amid atmospheric stone-clad streets, overlooked by a sea of terracotta roofs and the double towers of the cathedral. Protected by thick stone walls - and the mountains behind - Kotor draws comparisons with another fortified Adriatic wonder in Dubrovnik. Many favor Kotor for its compact layout, smaller crowds, and authenticity, however - having been spared from shelling during Yugoslavia's breakup. The tightknit streets here are patrolled by a slinking population of feline residents, who were adopted as the town's mascots, after being left behind by transient trader ships. Learn of the city's extensive heritage on the waves, in the dedicated maritime museum that is contained within Grgurina Palace. Pick your way through tight alleys of workshops and studios, walking below fresh laundry strung from windows, before settling into shiny, paved piazzas for an afternoon coffee or seafood meal. If you're up for an aerobic challenge, tackle the 1,350 steps up the steep walls to St. John's fortress. The views over the gorgeous bay make the arduous slog worth it, as you rise past the city's eye-catching 15th-century church bell tower.

Zadar, Croatia
WED, OCTOBER 15 • 08:00 - 19:00

Croatia's Capital of Cool, Zadar is a dazzling mesh of influences and creativity. Romans founded the city before the Venetians, Austrians, French, and Italians all had their say, leaving a wealth of architectural interest. Glorious turquoise-water beaches and heavenly waterfalls also lie within easy reach of this energetic city of festivals and outdoor fun. See the old town, with its robust city walls, boasting decorative stone gateways and marble streets. The church of St Donatus was built from stones pillaged from the Roman forum, while Zadar Cathedral - Dalmatia's biggest - stands among the many architectural treats of this city, which was once an impenetrable stronghold of Venice's republic. Head for the 'pillar of shame' with its chains to humiliate the criminals of a bygone time - or succumb to the tempting treats of shopping in the market. The sparkling Adriatic waters call you, and Kolovare Beach is a mere ten-minute wander from the old town. A day trip to Kornat National Park - which incorporates the Zadar Archipelago's immaculate scattering of beach-fringed islands - or to the divine waterfalls of Plitvice Lakes National Park, will introduce you to more of Croatia's thrilling natural beauty. The sea truly does sing here in Zadar, thanks to a unique waterfront artwork, which encapsulates the city's playful spirit. Designed to make music when the waves wash over it, the ebb and flow of the Adriatic plays the Sea Organ instrument like a maestro. Not far away, the Monument to the Sun is a 22-meter-wide disc, which gathers the sun's rays during sunny days and releases solar energy in the form of a magical light show after dark. Sit and admire the artwork coming to life, as one of the city's famous sunsets plays out before you.

Fusina (Venice), Italy
FRI, OCTOBER 17 • 07:00 - 00:00

Losing none of its allure over the years, this floating city of canals, bridges, and masks is a place of eternal beauty and enduring elegance. The lagoon of more than 100 islands is a heavenly sight, transporting visitors on a journey through time - from its Roman inception, through centuries of trade to the modern face we see today. Navigate Venice's sparkling waterways by romantic gondola, or on cruises along wide canal boulevards. Span the Grand Canal over its iconic original crossing, the Rialto Bridge, which - with its parade of tiny shops - gives some of the city's most endearing views. If the crowds unsettle you at any point, take two turns away from the main thoroughfares to find peace alone, amid the city's labyrinth of tiny streets. Hurry to Piazza San Marco to be immersed in Venice's elegant glory. Basilica San Marco transports you back to the wealthy days of the Doges, who ruled for over 1,000 years. Initially, their private chapel, it's now decorated with beautiful Byzantine mosaics. Nearby the Campanile di San Marco bell tower offers views over the higgledy-piggledy rooftops of times gone by. Just a hop skip and a jump around the corner is the Doge's Palace, where the levels of opulence ramp up even further. Justice was meted out in this stunning Palace, with the guilty walking to the cells across the covered Bridge of Sighs. Vaporetto trips to local islands offer even more adventures to float your boat, whether it's Murano with its world-famous glass, Torcello with its amazing Cathedrals, or Burano with its handmade lace and delightfully colorful painted houses.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
MON, OCTOBER 20 • 08:00 - 19:00

Croatia's crowning glory rears up vertically from the tranquil waters of the Adriatic, and Dubrovnik's daunting fortress town is a truly imposing sight to behold. Encircled by chunky stone walls so thick and dramatic they could have been purpose-built as a film set, this city's unmatched old town is the setting for countless films and shows - from Star Wars to Robin Hood, Game of Thrones, and every production in between seeking a truly authentic medieval flavor. This fantasy fortress's walls - which are no less than 12 meters thick at places - are certainly not just for show, however. They kept Dubrovnik safe when it was a maritime republic and they were besieged as recently as 1991, when Serbian and Montenegrin forces attacked, as Yugoslavia broke apart. Fully restored now, the stone streets of the city take you through a beautiful mosaic of architectural splendor, baroque churches, and splashing fountains. Tapering alleys rocket up from the central boulevard of Stradun, offering spectacular views down, but you'll need to walk the city walls to appreciate the fortress city's full scale. Banking up sharply to the rear, you can gaze across an ocean of terracotta roofs and church spires, clamoring together before the sparkling Adriatic. Visit the neighboring fort of Lovrijenac, for another perspective, or swing up to Srd fortress's glorious panorama on a cable car. Dubrovnik's streets are crammed with eateries and candlelit tables, where couples splash wine into glasses and enjoy gnocchi mixed with creamy truffle sauces. Nearby beaches like Banje are also close by, and hidden bays reward the intrepid who venture out beyond the old town. Take sunset drinks to sit back and watch as flotillas of sea kayaks roll by, or sail on the pristine waters to explore island gems like Lokrum - where peacocks are the only permanent residents.

Corfu, Greece
WED, OCTOBER 22 • 08:00 - 19:00

This sickle-shaped island of Mediterranean bliss flaunts its sun-kissed sophistication with effortless grace - having cherry-picked the best influences from Venetian, French and British occupiers. With over 3,000 years of history, The Grand Lady of the Ionian has played a starring role in Greek history and mythology, and legendary tales swirl around you, as you explore sparkling beaches, mountains splashed with wildflowers, and historical, perched fortresses. The soft hues of Corfu’s UNESCO World Heritage List Old Town brings together Corfu’s mesh of European influences, with its romantic stone floors and vine-clad cafes. Find somewhere to settle in for a morning coffee ritual like a true Corfiat, and sip at the laid-back pace of the locals - allowing the thick bitter concoction to settle before indulging. The oddly out-of-place sound of leather on willow can be heard in Spianada Square – the largest city square in the Balkan region - where a manicured cricket pitch spreads out incongruously below the Mediterranean sun. Take the hike up to the 13th-century Paleokastritsa Monastery, where you’ll be escorted by the resident goats, and have to step over cats contentedly rolling around your feet on arrival. This beautiful, daffodil-yellow building is splashed with a fresco of vivid purple fuchsias, and a crowning triad of bells. Inside, explore gold-framed frescoes, and watch as monks squeeze oil from the monastery’s trees’ bounty. Wander out among the groves to views of Corfu’s never-ending sea reaching out to the horison below you. Corfu’s sweeping sand beaches and hidden coves display the full spectrum of vivid Mediterranean seaside colours – which shift from turquoise greens to cobalt blues. The famous Canal d’Amour is a gorgeous inlet, and island legend says couples who swim together in this narrow channel of water stay together forever. Enjoy an afternoon sit-down and drink of ginger tea, or something a little stronger in the form of Corfu’s famous, radiant orange, kumquat liqueur.

Monemvasia (Laconia), Greece
FRI, OCTOBER 24 • 08:00 - 19:00

A town of rustic, lyrically romantic beauty, Monemvasia boasts a glorious natural setting - perched on a colossal rock island, which rears spectacularly from the waves. A truly unique castle city, the island is linked to the mainland by just a single solitary causeway. It is hard to imagine a better - and more impenetrable - setting for a fortress town than this, and the rock is laced with tight cobbled streets, exposed stone masonry, and pretty Byzantine churches. Known as the Gibraltar of Greece, you would be forgiven for assuming that the limestone monolith was unoccupied as you approach from the seas. Look a little closer, however, and you'll begin to pick out the ancient walls and terracotta roofs of the quaint town clinging to its steep, dramatic slopes - and the walls of the fortress crowning it. A natural stronghold of overwhelming romantic beauty - the rock is said to lend couples wedded here extra strong foundations to build from. Arrive on the island to wander the historic knot of streets of a true Adriatic wonder. Encounter gorgeous, tree-shaded terraces, which look out across the rippling blue waves. Visit the picturesque Church of Christ Elkomenos, where you can shelter in the cool interior, and see storied religious iconography. A historic paved pathway twists back on itself, rising sharply up the slope on a daunting ascent to the now uninhabited upper fortress. The views from here are even more incredible, as you look down across the rustic domes of the lower village's churches and stone-paved streets below.

Santorini, Greece
SUN, OCTOBER 26 • 08:00 - 19:00

Breathlessly romantic, and incredibly scenic, the azure domes and whitewash buildings that cascade down Santorini's slopes are prime honeymoon material - and relentlessly romantic. A true gem of the Cycladic Island group, Santorini is startlingly pretty, and its white windmills and dazzling villages are incredibly easy on the eye. Envy-inducing and evocatively beautiful, Santorini's sunsets are legendary, and the island is a highlight of any voyage to the Greek islands. Look out over the endless expanse of blue waves, filling the massive volcanic caldera of Santorini - and absorb one of the most spectacular views in the world. The sheer rock shoulders of the caldera create an immense, natural amphitheater - so enjoy the show, as you sip a local, volcanic-mineral enhanced white wine, and fall in love all over again. Any meal is well rounded off with the famous wine, Vinsanto. The east side of the island may lack the incredible panoramas, but it's ideal if all you want to do is recline on volcanic-sand beaches - which range in hues from charcoal-black to flame-red. This beautiful island was forged by powerful volcanic activity, and you can learn more about the huge eruption of 1,600 BCE - which wiped out the Minoan city at Akrotiri. The eruption sank the center of the island, forming the moon-shaped topography we see now. Visit the archaeological site that has revealed and preserved the village, which was lost to time below the pumice and ash. Some whisper that this destroyed town may even be the fabled Atlantis.

Athens (Piraeus), Greece
WED, OCTOBER 29 • 07:00 - 00:00

A city of legend, civilization, and enduring culture, Athens is a majestic and magical urban sprawl. Extraordinary elegance and grace combine with grit and graft in Greece's capital, where highways encase ruins from antiquity, and gleaming museums and galleries stand beside concrete sprayed with edgy street art. These contrasts enhance and elevate the wonders of this 2,500-year-old city, however, which counts extraordinary contributions to philosophy, drama, and democracy, among its global legacy. Piraeus's giant port and naval base welcome you to the edge of Athens' urban area. From there it's a simple jaunt to the center. The majestic ancient citadel of the Acropolis dominates an elevated platform and is a constant presence as you explore the city. The wonderful remains of the columned temple of the Parthenon - which date back to the 5th century BC - stand here, representing the pinnacle of classical architecture. The nearby Acropolis Museum adds context to your visit and frames the broad views from its giant glass windows. Or rise up Mount Lycabettus, to be rewarded with perhaps Athens' best panorama of the Acropolis sitting high over the city on its grand stage. See the marble horseshoe of the Old Olympic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896, for more of the city's enduring legacy. Elsewhere, golden beaches and temples stretch out along the coastline, should you wish to explore a little further afield. Coffee is an art form to the Greeks, and it's an unwritten rule that coffee time must never be rushed. So prepare to settle down for a couple of hours and lose yourself in a good chat. Feeling hungry - try traditional souvlaki made with sauces handed from generation to generation.

From the pier you will board your motorcoach and drive through the bustling town towards the 'Upper Rock Nature Reserve'. Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Viewpoints Here you can stand on top of the Rock, and you feel as if you were on top of the world. Europe is at your feet. Africa fills one horizon, while the gates to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic are on either side. The journey to the top of the Rock rewards you with a truly breath-taking view. From a height of 1400 feet (426m) you will see the African coastline, where the waters of the Atlantic meet the Mediterranean, Spain's Costa del Sol and a panoramic view of the city far below, the quays, marinas and bays. St Michaels Cave The tour then proceeds to St. Michael's Cave where one can appreciate a mass of strangely shaped stalagmites and stalactites. The strains of classical music drift through this enormous Gothic style cavern. Moorish Castle Upon exiting the cave, you will then board your motorcoach and drive towards Moorish Castle. The fortifications on and around the site of the Moorish Castle were first built in 1160, or earlier. These were, however, destroyed when the Spanish re-conquered Gibraltar from 1309-1333. The Tower of Homage, its main feature, dominates the hillside and the landward approach to Gibraltar. A rebuilt tower dates primarily from about 1333 AD. Gorham's Cave Viewing Platform You will then board your motorcoach and travel to Gorham's Cave viewing platform. The platform has a series of interpretation panels which tell not just the story of the UNESCO World Heritage Site but of the area as a whole. At this wonderfully scenic lookout one sees the unique views of the entire World Heritage Site which extends to the highest point of the Rock at O'Hara's Battery, 426m, 1400 feet above sea level, including Mediterranean Steps. Gibraltar, American War Memorial, Trafalgar Cemetery, North African Coast, Straits of Gibraltar Depart the pier for the short drive along the outskirts of town, past the American War Memorial and Trafalgar Cemetery, en route to Europa Point. Upon arrival, take in spectacular panoramic views of the coast of North Africa, approximately 12 miles (about 19.3 kilometres) across the famous Straits of Gibraltar. After a photo stop here, re-board your coach and head to Rooke's Battery, a now-derelict artillery battery on the west side of the Rock of Gibraltar. Rooke's Battery has a plaque labelled '1906' and is named after Sir George Rooke, who commanded the British Fleet when Gibraltar came under British rule. From here, continue on-foot to the nearby Windsor Suspension Bridge. Windsor Bridge, Gibraltar Bay & City Views, King Charles V Wall, Macaques One of Gibraltar's newest tourist attractions, the Windsor Bridge is not for the faint-hearted. This spectacular feat of engineering is approximately 233 feet (about 71 metres) in length across an approximately 164-foot-deep (about 50-metre-deep) gorge, affording visitors magnificent views across the bay and city of Gibraltar. After crossing the Windsor Bridge, walk down for a photo stop at the King Charles V Wall, better-known as the 'Ape's Den'. Here, macaques, a breed of tail-less monkeys, roam free on the rocky slopes. These endearing creatures have a penchant for handbags, cameras, and hats. Please note they are wild animals, and not to be fed, touched, nor handled, however friendly they may seem. Princess Caroline's Battery, City Hall, Mayor's Parlour, Canapes, National Art Gallery, Mayor Next, re-board your coach and drive to the nearby Princess Caroline's Battery, a former artillery battery located at the northern end of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. Constructed in 1732, it was named after the third daughter of King George II. Your last stop is at City Hall. Here, visit the Mayor's Parlour, and enjoy some cold canapes and beverages. Some free time is then made available to explore the building, including the National Art Gallery, where you can view and take photos of the works on display. You may even run into His Worship, the Mayor of Gibraltar, and enjoy a chance to chat and even be photographed with him. Leaving City Hall, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier. Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 547 yards (about 500 metres), at times over uneven, natural, and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 15 steps at the Mayor's Parlour, and 25 steps at Rooke's Battery. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, bottled water, and British Pounds, Euros, or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Do not feed, touch, or handle the macaques, as they are wild animals. We highly-recommend leaving your personal belongings on the bus when able; otherwise, make sure they are always visible. The tour sequence may vary. This tour is based on the WW II history of Gibraltar and discovering the importance of its strategically unique situation. In 1940, Britain was at war with Germany and Italy and the future looked bleak for Gibraltar as the enemy surrounded it. Winston Churchill and the British military leaders believed that an attack on Gibraltar was imminent. The answer was to construct a massive network of tunnels, to build a fortress inside a fortress, a city within a city. 100 Ton Gun Departing from the pier, drive past the Second World War Evacuation Monument and then follow the British Defense Wall, built during the 18th and 19th Century, in white Portland Limestone. King's Bastion will be seen, where General Elliott defended Gibraltar during the last Great Siege. The first stop is the 100 Ton Gun, a 17.72 inch 100 ton Rifled Muzzle Loader, the Supergun of the Victorian era. Only 4 guns of this type were built in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. This stop includes an exhibition at Napier of Magdala Battery. Pillars of Hercules The tour then leads up the winding roads to the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, and past the Pillars of Hercules landmark. According to Greek mythology Gibraltar is one of the Pillars Hercules. Barbary Apes The next stop are the famous Barbary Apes, these Apes have had strong ties with the military and the well-known statement by Sir Winston Churchill that Gibraltar will remain British as long as the Apes are here. WW II Tunnels The final stop is Hays Level, the Second World War tunnels where thousands of military personnel lived and worked inside the Rock. Photographs documenting the work of the troops are on display here. Finally, the tour continues past the Tower of Homage, part of the Moorish Castle built in 1333 (2nd Moorish Conquest), the oldest free standing building in Gibraltar. The tour will end at Casemates Square, where you may shop and relaxation on your own, or if you prefer to return to the port.
