The Hanging Monasteries of Meteora
GRVOL003
Sometimes the world offers sights so enthralling that the heart misses a beat. The medieval monasteries of Meteora, impossibly perched upon towering outcrops of rock, are such a sight. After driving through the scenic plains of Thessaly (or Thessalia), you’ll come to Kalabaka, where 14th-century Greek Orthodox monks built 24 monasteries—of which six remain—to bring themselves closer to God. Ascending the steps to two of these historic religious communities is rewarded by the spectacular views from the top, and the ancient icons, frescoes and manuscripts displayed within. Afterwards, reflect on the experience over lunch at a local restaurant before returning to the ship.

The Mountainous Villages of Centaurus
GRVOL001
According to ancient Greek mythology, gods and heroes flocked to Mount Pelion, the homeland of Centaurus, to be entertained. During this experience, let your imagination wander this lore whilst discovering, in present day, two charming villages, enchanting landscapes and rich, fascinating culture. These villages, largely untouched over centuries, are dotted across Pelion's slopes amongst a verdant array of horse chestnut, walnut and apple trees, threaded by sparkling clear waters. Architecture is unique, with whitewashed stone and half-timbered houses with overhanging balconies and slate roofs built on the mountainside and nestled amidst lush foliage. Depart from the port of Volos by coach, and en route to the mountain village of Portaria, you will pass through Anakasia and Katochori. Portaria, known as 'the lady of Pelion' and 'the lady on the reception', is the first village towards the top of Pelion and thus, is postioned to 'welcome' visitors. Like most Pelion villages, Portaria features many large Neoclassical mansions with distinct regionally prevalent features like a roof of stone slabs—evidence of the influences of ages past. Rejoin your coach and drive towards the picturesque village of Makrinitsa, perhaps the most beautiful village in Pelion and one of the prettiest in Greece. Wend your way through its charmingly traditional houses, old churches, and little shops selling local delicacies—or relax with a coffee in the impressive central square, under the shade of the plane trees. Serenity and fascination compete for your attention; perhaps you will choose to admire the superb frescoes painted by the famous local painter Theophilos (1866-1934), found in one of the cafés in the square. The artist is known to have wandered around Pelion trading his artwork for food, and his murals reflect local scenes and personal visions. Feast your senses on these unrivalled images before returning to the port of Volos.

Truffle Hunting in Magical Meteora
GRVOL004Enter the esoteric world of Greek truffle culture by hunting for and sampling the highly prized fungi amid the bewitching landscapes of Meteora. After a journey through beautiful Thessaly, learn and explore at the Meteora Natural History Museum and Mushroom Museum in Kalabaka. You’ll continue to a nearby forest and will have a chance to view the soaring rock formations, many topped by ancient ‘hanging monasteries’. In the shade of the trees, you’ll take part in an authentic truffle hunting experience led by experts with trained dogs, followed by a mouthwatering meal of truffle and mushroom pasta.
