Piraeus's giant port and naval base welcome you to the edge of Athens' urban area. From there it's a simple jaunt to the center. The majestic ancient citadel of the Acropolis dominates an elevated platform and is a constant presence as you explore the city. The wonderful remains of the columned temple of the Parthenon - which date back to the 5th century BC - stand here, representing the pinnacle of classical architecture. The nearby Acropolis Museum adds context to your visit and frames the broad views from its giant glass windows. Monemvasia (Laconia), Greece
A town of rustic, lyrically romantic beauty, Monemvasia boasts a glorious natural setting - perched on a colossal rock island, which rears spectacularly from the waves. A truly unique castle city, the island is linked to the mainland by just a single solitary causeway. It is hard to imagine a better - and more impenetrable - setting for a fortress town than this, and the rock is laced with tight cobbled streets, exposed stone masonry, and pretty Byzantine churches. Known as the Gibraltar of Greece, you would be forgiven for assuming that the limestone monolith was unoccupied as you approach from the seas. Look a little closer, however, and you'll begin to pick out the ancient walls and terracotta roofs of the quaint town clinging to its steep, dramatic slopes - and the walls of the fortress crowning it. A natural stronghold of overwhelming romantic beauty - the rock is said to lend couples wedded here extra strong foundations to build from. Arrive on the island to wander the historic knot of streets of a true Adriatic wonder. Encounter gorgeous, tree-shaded terraces, which look out across the rippling blue waves. Visit the picturesque Church of Christ Elkomenos, where you can shelter in the cool interior, and see storied religious iconography. A historic paved pathway twists back on itself, rising sharply up the slope on a daunting ascent to the now uninhabited upper fortress. The views from here are even more incredible, as you look down across the rustic domes of the lower village's churches and stone-paved streets below.

Located in the valley of the River Alfeios, Olympia is a staggering archaeological site of immense ruins and an enduring legacy. Visit the museum and Olympia Stadium - where the ancient games were held in honor of the Greek god Zeus. As many as 45,000 spectators fit into the mud seats, to witness the ultimate contest of athleticism. See the stand where judges would sit and the white blocks where runners would line up to compete. The tradition continues stronger than ever, and the Olympic flame of the modern games is ignited by the sun here, in the ruins of the Temple of Hera. It is then taken to spread the Olympic values across the globe. The Temple of Zeus, and the Statue of Zeus - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - also stood here in all of their glory. Hewn from limestone, the temple contained the 13-meter-tall statue of Zeus, which was sculpted by Phidias - one of Ancient Greece's finest artists. Although the statue has been destroyed, you can walk the temple's ruins and see the guesthouse where the majestic wonder was painstakingly crafted.

Once ashore, dip into the history of Bodrum or Halicarnassus as it was once known. Still visible are remains of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Mausoleum of Mausolus, once an impressive 46 meters high. In the 15th century, some of the stones of the ruined Mausoleum were reused by the Knights Hospitallers of St John to build the Castle of St. Peter which still dominates the seafront today. As much as the foundations of the castle are steeped in history, so are its exhibits today as home to the Underwater Archaeology Museum. Looking for a souvenir or a chance to people watch, head to the large bazaar by the castle. Set out as shops rather than stalls you can find almost anything from spices, fruit, and vegetables to textiles and local pottery. You won't be able to leave empty-handed.

Aegean Coastal Cruise by Gulet
BXN-EEnjoy the sea breeze and scenic coastal beauty of Turkey during this half-day cruise aboard an authentic 'Gulet'. Turkish Coast Living in Bodrum between the two World Wars, Turkish writer Cevat Sakir Kabaagac wrote an account of his idyllic sailing excursions along the Turkish coast, an area completely untouched by tourism at the time. Kabaagac entitled his book Mavi Yolculuk (Blue Voyage), and any cruise along this coast now shares that name. Wooden Gulet From the Bodrum pier, a short walk brings you to the pier where you board the traditional Turkish 'Gulet.' The locally crafted gulet's are built of pinewood and feature pointed bows and rounded sterns. Karaada/ Black Island Admire Karaada, or Black Island, which is the large hump-backed island you will see, leaving Bodrum. In calm weather you will see bubbles rising up into a sea-cave in the rocks, where a hot spring said to have therapeutic qualities and fine grey mud is reputed to have been used by beauty guru Elizabeth Arden for some very expensive facial mudpacks. Swimming During the tour there are also two opportunities for a swimming break in the Poyraz Limani, a small green bay and the around Karaada. Swimming will be approximately 1 hour at each location. On the way back you will cruise through a series of mysterious coves, inlets and small islands pitching out into the clear turquoise water of the Aegean. Refreshments Two glasses of local wine or beer and soft drinks, tea and coffee will be served along with light snacks during your scenic coastal cruise on the gulet. Excursions are at an easy pace without the need for excessive walking or physical activities.
