Alberobello’s Fairytale Trulli
ITBDS004Experience the quirky charm of Alberobello, the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Site of three in Puglia. Its the simple but unique trulli, or dry stone hut dwellings, with their tajine-lid roofs originating in the 16th century, that have made the Itria Valley world-famous. See the magical appeal of these huts up close, wander the town’s narrow streets, and take photos that recall the set of a fantasy film.

Discover Delightful Lecce
ITBDS003Explore the ancient streets of Lecce, affectionately known as 'The Florence of the South' due to its architecture and culture. At the centre of the peninsula of Salento—the heel on Italy’s boot—Lecce’s honey-coloured stone buildings have captured the hearts of travellers for millennia. As you walk between piazzas, you’ll see the Roman, Rococo and Baroque influences that have shaped its aesthetic. See stunning structures, such as the Basilica di Santa Croce and Lecce Cathedral. Stroll around at leisure, browse boutiques and absorb the vibrancy of this enchanting city.

Ostuni, Bright City on the Hill
ITBDS005Discover magnificent sea views and architectural singularity when you wander through Ostuni’s lime-washed, flagstone streets. This ancient Pugliese town, known for its structures all being a bright white due to a limestone wash and enduring sunshine, was built over three hills and has its origins in the Stone Age. Doors and flowers offer bursts of colour in delightful contrast. From the top of the town, admire the ancient olive trees that have borne fruit for three millennia, and contemplate the mesmerising turquoise Adriatic Sea below. From the Piazza della Libertà to the old town, Ostuni is replete with Romanesque and Gothic buildings, such as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Gelato in hand, browse the shops or take in the sights and sounds before returning to the ship.

Puglia by Bike and A Cheese Tasting
ITBDS009From Ceglie Messapica to Alberobello, the landscapes of Puglia are best discovered by bicycle, when you pedal along the scenic, car-free Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto (Aqueduct Cycle Path). Start at a relaxing pace amidst the clean air of the Itria Valley, passing bountiful vineyards and Alberobello’s inimitable trulli (drystone dwellings) on the way. Pause on the aqueduct’s bridges to appreciate the panoramic views from above, before stopping for an energizing coffee in Locorotondo. Finally, you’ll head to a cheese factory for a tasting experience that's the perfect finale to this unhurried exploration of the region.

Sun and Sea at Coco Beach Club
ITBDS008Experience the restorative calm of Coco Beach Club, a dazzling sweep of Adriatic coast that offers everything for a perfect day of sun, sea and sand. The swimming pool area is ideal for young families to splash and play within easy reach of the restaurant and children’s play area. Adults may prefer the low reef and pebble beach options; from here, they can take refreshing dips in the crystal-clear waters and make use of the excellent nearby services and amenities.

The Trulli of Alberobello and Gleaming Ostuni
ITBDS002Like most sleepy towns in southern Italy, Alberobello’s streets are narrow, the weather is warm, and the espresso has bite. But its trulli with their unusual shape and elf-hat roofs are like something from the world of Hans Christian Andersen. Stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage site, before lunch at a trullo restaurant in the historic centre. Later you’ll take a 60-minute drive to the Ostuni, the ancient hilltop city overlooking the Adriatic Sea. A guided tour of this fascinating town will round off the day before the drive back to Brindisi.

Wine Tasting at Masseria Altemura Estate
ITBDS006Sample some of the finest wines in Puglia paired with well-matched light bites at Masseria Altemura, a balmy and sun-kissed wine estate by the sea. The building that houses this family-owned winery on the Salento peninsula, amidst fertile vineyards and olive groves, has stood since the 17th century. Discover the winemaking history and traditions of the masseria (farm), its original buildings and the bountiful land upon which they stand. Against a sunlight-dappled backdrop, sample the deep, aromatic flavours of four hand-selected vintages, expertly paired with local foods.

At th edge of the shimmering azure sea, Monemvasia has only one gate of entry, and once you've crossed the threshold, you're in a truly special place. Its winding stone pathways beckon you to meander along, discovering Byzantine churches and admiring ancient mansions before reaching historic Elkomenos Square. As you take it all in, continue your exploration by venturing uphill to marvel at the octagonal Church of Agia Sofia, which anchors the upper town and offers dazzling views across the sheltered rooftops to the endless sea. The Hanging Monasteries of Meteora
GRVOL003
Sometimes the world offers sights so enthralling that the heart misses a beat. The medieval monasteries of Meteora, impossibly perched upon towering outcrops of rock, are such a sight. After driving through the scenic plains of Thessaly (or Thessalia), you’ll come to Kalabaka, where 14th-century Greek Orthodox monks built 24 monasteries—of which six remain—to bring themselves closer to God. Ascending the steps to two of these historic religious communities is rewarded by the spectacular views from the top, and the ancient icons, frescoes and manuscripts displayed within. Afterwards, reflect on the experience over lunch at a local restaurant before returning to the ship.

The Mountainous Villages of Centaurus
GRVOL001
According to ancient Greek mythology, gods and heroes flocked to Mount Pelion, the homeland of Centaurus, to be entertained. During this experience, let your imagination wander this lore whilst discovering, in present day, two charming villages, enchanting landscapes and rich, fascinating culture. These villages, largely untouched over centuries, are dotted across Pelion's slopes amongst a verdant array of horse chestnut, walnut and apple trees, threaded by sparkling clear waters. Architecture is unique, with whitewashed stone and half-timbered houses with overhanging balconies and slate roofs built on the mountainside and nestled amidst lush foliage. Depart from the port of Volos by coach, and en route to the mountain village of Portaria, you will pass through Anakasia and Katochori. Portaria, known as 'the lady of Pelion' and 'the lady on the reception', is the first village towards the top of Pelion and thus, is postioned to 'welcome' visitors. Like most Pelion villages, Portaria features many large Neoclassical mansions with distinct regionally prevalent features like a roof of stone slabs—evidence of the influences of ages past. Rejoin your coach and drive towards the picturesque village of Makrinitsa, perhaps the most beautiful village in Pelion and one of the prettiest in Greece. Wend your way through its charmingly traditional houses, old churches, and little shops selling local delicacies—or relax with a coffee in the impressive central square, under the shade of the plane trees. Serenity and fascination compete for your attention; perhaps you will choose to admire the superb frescoes painted by the famous local painter Theophilos (1866-1934), found in one of the cafés in the square. The artist is known to have wandered around Pelion trading his artwork for food, and his murals reflect local scenes and personal visions. Feast your senses on these unrivalled images before returning to the port of Volos.
