Cruise Overview

Istanbul’s architectural anthology segues into Milos' turquoise beaches, Rhodes’ emerald hillsides and the swirling blue palette of the Cyclades and Dodecanese. Skim the Turkish Riviera and Greece’s sickle-shaped shores en route to Athens, before pausing in the Sporades, breezing through windmill-dotted Mykonos and chasing legends in Crete. Taste Türkiye’s Turquoise Coast and brave Lesbos’ petrified forest before Byzantium beckons.

GRMJT001

Depart port towards Taxiarchis monastery . Located in Lesvados, north of Mantamados, the Monastery of Taxiarchis Michael (Archangel Michael) is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Lesvos and Greece. Tradition holds that the monastery dates back to the 10th century, when it was attacked by Saracen pirates who slaughtered the monks. Only a novice, Gabriel, survived and created a miraculous icon of Taxiarchis from the blood of the monks and clay. The first historical record of the monastery is from 1661, and it is known that the original small church was replaced in the 18th century. The complex is fortress-like, surrounded by tall buildings and featuring a tower-steeple. The current church, a three-aisled basilica, was built in 1879. Inside, the unique relief icon of Archangel Michael, housed in a luxurious canopy made in 1766, takes a central place. The church also holds liturgical vestments of Patriarch Gregory V, gifted to his deputy, Porphyrios, who later became Metropolitan of Mytilene. A noteworthy tradition involves small metallic shoes dedicated by the faithful, symbolizing the belief that Taxiarchis wears out his shoes traveling the island at night. After the guided visit of the monastery you will enjoy a local treat of greek dumblings with honey and depart for Vranas Olive Oil museum . It is one of the first steam-powered factories of Lesvos Island and the Aegean. It was built in 1887 by the grandfather of Greek Nobel prize winner poet Odysseas Elytis, in a region with a centuries-old olive cultivation tradition. This industrial monument is of unique architectural value, operated continuously for about 90 years until the early 1970s, when it closed. At present this monumental ensemble of industrial and local history, has been preserved, restored, and showcased. Through its complete architectural and mechanical restoration, the old olive press was transformed into an attractive museum that narrates, in a direct and vivid way, its own story and the history of the region and its era. At the end of the tour of the premises you will reembark your coach and drive to Aghios Therapontas Church . The Church of Saint Therapon, an iconic landmark in Mytilene, began construction around 1850 on the site of a former chapel that served a nearby hospital. The church features a cross-in-square layout with Gothic architectural elements, the facade showcases Ionic and Corinthian columns, and the structure is topped with five domes.Inside, the church boasts a wooden iconostasis, archbishop's throne, pulpit, and reliquaries. FOLLOW THE WINE FROM ANCIENT TIME TO TODAY The Cypriot Wine....A History of 5500 years! The Cyprus wine is a tradition that counts over 5500 years! According to the ancient tradition, Cypriots are probably the oldest wine producers in the worlds, who produced wine before the Ancient Greeks for 1500 years. The Cyprus wine has its roots in Ancient Greek Roman and Egyptian years. The Cypriots wines have enjoyed all Cypriots residents and have an important role for the local community and history. The main wine vineyard is on the Southern slopes of the Troodos Mountain, which is as high as the sun is warm. The sun-filled grapes on the island make delicious world-famous wines, such as Commandaria, port, sherry etc, as well as other white, red, and rose wines. Cyprus produces two varieties of grapes, black or “red” and “xynisteri” or white, which is the only one in Cyprus.Varieties of Grapes:Xynisteri the most important variety in Cyprus which white grape gives exceptionally light white wines.Maratheftiko or Vamvakaki is the only major category of red grape variety that gives wines with great aging potential.Yiannoudi a variety of red grapes, but it’s planted to a limited extent. This beautiful wine region comprises 20 scenic villages that decorate the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains. The wineries scattered along this route, each in its own way generously reward the visitor seeking a unique and eclectic wine experience. We begin our tour with the transfer of app 55 minutes to the first winery.Gerolemos winery. The family has a long tradition (500 YEARS) of wine making. Here run experiments with new varieties and cultivation methods which is possible due to huge funds given to rediscover indigenous grape varieties that date back to classical times. We visit a vineyard, ‘The bank of the Cyprus varieties’ with the oldest varieties such Maratheftiko , Yiannoudi , Kanella , and Omoio. Enjoy tasting of some delicious wines like Xynisteri or Maratheftiko,Morokanella and of a very special dessert wine Commandaria. This type of wine dates to the Crusade and was introduced and produced first by the knights residing in Limassol. As surprise the daughters of the owner will play piano or violin during our wine tasting. The next winery on our tour is Zambartas Winery in Agios Amvrosios. Akis Zambartas started the family history in wine when he went to France in the 1970´s to study chemistry and enology. Back on the island he decided to conduct research and recorded 13 lost indigenous Cypriot grape varieties which changed the Cyprus wine industry dramatically. When his son Marcos decided to quit the corporate world and studied wine maker in Australia, Akis followed his dream and established his own boutique winery with focus on producing quality wine from the indigenous varieties. Father and son teamed up to run this family business and today it is the son and his wife that took it over. Get the opportunity to taste different indigenous wines with a panorama view and Cyprus specialities. Next visit will be Kolossi Medieval Castle. Serving as a fine example of military architecture, Kolossi castle was originally built in the 13th century, and rebuilt in its present form in the 15th century. After the fall of Acre in 1291, it served as the Grand Commandery of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and in the 14th, century came under the domain of the Knights Templar. During their stay in Cyprus, the Knights produced and exported a sweet wine, which became known as the ‘vin de Commanderie’. Today, Commandaria wine is one of the island’s traditional wines and one of the oldest named wines in the world, having had the same name for eight centuries. Next to the castle located a fantastic fruit Plantation that also cultivate table grapes and non-alcoholic grape juice. Under the crapes in nature, you will be rewarded with the taste of traditional specialties cooked by Chrystalla the plantation owner. Most of them having as basic ingredients wine and vine leaves. Unlimited wine and water are also included.
