Uncover the True Soul of Granada
ESAGP004Lush, colourful, upbeat Granada was an idyllic Moorish kingdom for two centuries whilst the Nasrid Dynasty reigned with an unrivalled splendour, and took on even greater significance when the Catholic Monarchs captured the city. Although now predominantly Christian, Granada has inherited rich Islamic and Jewish influences, evidenced in Albaicín (old Moorish town) and the Alcaicería (spice market). You will begin at the Alhambra complex, atop the hill, before you make your way to the hulking Carlos V Palace, which clashes spectacularly with its surroundings. Take in breathtaking views over the Albaicín and gypsy Sacromonte quarter. Then, make your way downwards, along a charming forested pathway, to reach the lower part of the Albaicín quarter and its untouched labyrinthine structure. Continue to the 14th-century Corral del Carbón, a cobbled courtyard nestled within brick galleries. This Nasrid-era corn exchange later became an inn for coal dealers (hence its modern name, Coal Yard), and later metamorphosised again into a theatre.
